GEORGE KAMPER + FLUID MOTION

June 17, 2021
When Venice Magazine approached George Kamper, the highly conceptual idea became his greatest challenge. George was tasked with depicting World Champion Artistic Swimmer Kristina Makushenko’s skills and precision underwater while creating compelling still photographs that worked in a magazine format.

'Moon Walking' and other rigorous positions executed with extreme precision are easily translated in video, but with stills, communicating the idea boils down to the essence of the visual. George had to account for loss of color, exposure, and all the challenges that come with shooting underwater. He even created his own bubble generator to add the very fine bubbles surrounding Kristina in some of the close-up images.

George's unique skills, combined with his ability to create a visual narrative, made for an editorial that allowed the viewer to truly appreciate Kristina's underwater precision.

We asked George what his favorite part of the project was and he shared...

"shooting is always the most fun of any project for me. Standing on a ladder or laying on the bottom of a pool in 15’ of water shooting an accomplished athlete performing amazing acrobatics underwater is pretty cool."

George is based out of sunny Miami, Florida but always has his camera bag packed and ready for his next shoot!
