DENISE GALLAGHER + MOONSONG

November 17, 2021
We asked Denise to share her journey to get to Moonsong, this is what she had to say:

"Eleven years ago, I sat down with a sketchbook and a pencil and wrote a story about a girl who befriends a wolf even though he has “teeth and claws and no manners at all.” I needed a story to work with in order to strengthen my picture book illustration skills, and I wanted a folk tale with flora and fauna and cake! I rather liked the story, as it turned out, and felt that it had the potential to be published. I attended writing workshops and critique groups and I revised the manuscript two or three or ten times. I changed illustration styles over the years and applied what I’d learned about picture books along the way."

"Eventually, I changed the setting from a dark forest to a lush and brightly-colored jungle, the wolf became a tiger and “Moonsong” was born. I worked with an editor at a small press who was excited about the manuscript and the colorful illustrations. I loved creating illustrations to accompany my words. All of my favorite things were there — dancing and singing and flora and fauna and cake! Now, after a lot of hard work, it is so exciting to see “Moonsong” in bookstores and libraries and in the hands of families far and wide. The most fun, though, has been listening as the children I visit sing the Moonsong with me while I share my colorful illustrations and the story of a little girl and her Tiger with them!"
