"Photographing a live show dovetails quite nicely with shooting live sporting events, which I also do with a bit of regularity. The two employ very similar methodologies, whether it be the use of mixed focal lengths, trying to convey both a sense of place, or providing tight images of the subject, all while needing to capture the important moments of a performance that can’t be replicated, with a performer whom you can’t just ask to go back and do another take. The one big difference that I found, however, is that it’s difficult to frame and focus when you’re cracking up so hard that there are tears streaming down your cheeks, and it’s really hard to hold a camera steady when you’re doubled over with laughter."
