NADAL RETIREMENT + DARREN CARROLL

December 5, 2024

Photographer Darren Carroll has covered the U.S. Open for many years—first for Sports Illustrated and later, and currently, for the tournament itself. It has been a significant part of his long career photographing sports at every level of competition, from juniors to amateurs to professionals. Over the years, he has captured countless remarkable moments and incredible athletes, but only a rare few stand out as a true privilege to cover. Rafael Nadal is one of those exceptional individuals.

Carroll vividly recalls Nadal’s unforgettable win at the 2019 U.S. Open. As the tournament photographer tasked with shadowing the champion after the final, he witnessed Nadal emerge victorious after nearly five hours of play. Nadal had taken the first two sets, lost the next two to Daniil Medvedev, and somehow clawed his way back to win the fifth set 6–4. While Nadal displayed no signs of strain on the court, Carroll saw a different side in the locker room, where Nadal could barely stand and needed the support of a coach just to change into jeans for his press conference. That moment underscored Nadal’s extraordinary drive and dedication—qualities Carroll found deeply inspiring.

Now, with Nadal’s retirement official, Carroll reflects on the loss of a true legend. Nadal will be greatly missed at Flushing Meadows. Gracias, Rafa.

Photographer Amy Mikler was kayaking in the bay near her clan’s vacation spot, when she met some local oyster farmers. Their hard work and connection to the water sparked something deeper in Amy's creative mind. That chance encounter brought to life an idea Amy had been nurturing for some time: a project that celebrates The Farm Behind The Food.
